Beat Them All

They are heroes at the golf clubs. They walk with their broad shoulders hawkishly, brag about their achievements and goals, stand tall like a winner, and are known as pros. Many people wait for their turns to take lessons from them at the range. When they come to tee off they start from the black tees way behind my white ones. Their tee shots would carry three hundred plus in routine. Bunkers and rough shots are no issue to them. Their second shots usually land on the greens. And they would play under and scratch in routine.

I am a casual golfer, who started playing late in life. Ever since I have begun playing I only paused due to injury, weather, or epidemic. My consistency in golf is the talk of the town. Not being an athlete, I haven’t improved much but I am a survivor on the course. I would take nine strokes from these golf lords whenever I played with them. They would scare me with the velocity of their swing. Especially with the thwack of their one woods. I used to dream that one day I will take them head-on. That day never came. I played friendly matches with them and I lost one after another. Each time I played with them I learned something. As my nephew Sairam often loves to quote Mr. Nelson Mandela, “I never lose. I either win or learn.’ I have not stopped learning and I never will.

In the great game of golf, there are certain hours that favor or disfavor you. You just got to be on the course to avail of them. Or you should be off the course to avoid them. Last week, that hour came and the whole week belonged to me. I beat three of these lords one after another. The fourth barely escaped defeat and came square with me at the last green. One by one their game got scattered on the fairways and greens. From Royal Palm to Golf & Country Club to PAF Skyview, grass and greens assisted me. Bunker sands, trees, bushes, water hazards, and Out of Bounds, everything stood by me and against them. They came to join my flight one by one and kept falling into the web of my winning spell.

Golf belongs to none but effort works for all. Those who walk holding victory in their wallets, usually lose it to humble pickpocketers; whether in golf or in life. They lose to people who have composure and play with their heads and hands, not with pride. Overconfidence and underestimation are the two major ingredients in the tales of most defeats. Professionals carry certain pride, the armor of skills, the unbreachable fort of self-confidence, a saddle of experience on the back of the thoroughbred of training. They have all the right to be proud and act as premiers on the course and in the clubhouse. But they should be watchful about the humble players. Like me, these people ride on the bare horse of faith and carry the sword of struggle. They may lack in all abilities and facilities but they are loaded with patience and persistence. Regularity and continuity can breach castles of all kinds and Pharos of all trades.

Arrival

Arrival

I swear,

after seeing your face

the whole world is

fraud and fantasy

  • Rumi

“Once I have seen your ocean blue eyes, I can not see elsewhere. Ever since I held you in my arms, I cannot hold anything other than you.”, exclaims a mother holding her infant in her lap. The father steps in the room and looks at both of them adorably, undecided who he loves more, baby or mother. He knows he can’t stay away from both of them for long.

This is the story of another young family in another town. They are ecstatic on the arrival of their newborn and they have been through much to get to this cherishable point.

A moon teaches gradualness

and deliberation and how one gives birth

to oneself slowly. Patience with small details

makes perfect a large work, like the universe.

What nine months of attention does for an embryo

forty early mornings will do for your gradually growing wholeness.

  • Rumi

Though pain is something all of us avoid, there is one pain we wait for. In fact, we welcome and celebrate it. This is the pain of contractions. An epidural may provide some ease but there is no escape. The task to get through pregnancy and delivery is strenuous and backbreaking. It is a matter of much more than pain. It demands patience, tolerance, a big heart, and a strong mind. It requires an abundance of time and sacrifice.

After all, nothing valuable comes easily. They say the process of delivery itself is a new birth for the mother, as well.

One look at the newborn’s face makes any amount of pain worth it. What a mystery nature unfolds and how it buds into an adult. A newborn is an answer to a mother’s prayers and pregnancy is an announcement of that benediction. Just imagine the immensity of the creator’s imagination and inventiveness of the process of birth. It begins with a look and a kiss and ends up in a womb and a cradle. The relationship of tenderness, fondness, loveness, and sweetness breeds a new world of uniqueness. It is a common phenomenon that parents imprint the baby’s mind with their own beliefs but remember, a baby brings many changes in their parent’s life as well. Yes, babies keep them under their thumb and enslave them with the rope of their innocence and fragility. It is two-way binding; an unwritten contract full of conditions and concessions. The world has to make space for the incomers. They need their room, bed, kitchen and silverware, clothing, washings, and wrappings. And though they seem like a blank slate, they know how to get all of it.

Their cry can pierce a heart of stone and fiber. Their scream can shake castles and forts. Their looks can open any kernel and their smiles can touch cardiac cores. They know how to melt a cold heart and how to induce you to love. All grown-ups have a hidden baby inside them, and infants can ignite it convincingly. In order to get rid of all your anxiety and depression, I would recommend you spend time with a newborn. It may make your time miserable at times but you would not think of any of your worries.

These fragile babies grow up to be leaders, statesmen, philosophers, scientists, astronauts, composers, singers, actors, and great business tycoons. Some of them single-handedly change the outlook of the entire humanity. Who can predict that a tenuous little fellow in a baby cart would grow up to be able to achieve wonders in the course of a few more years?

The first glance from the eyes of the beloved is like the spirit that moved upon the face of the waters, giving birth to heaven and earth.

Love, Light, and Life

Communication is to a relationship what water is to a plant. There are hundreds of ways to converse and connect but nothing beats the contact by eye and touch of heart. Eyes convey what the heart wants and transmit what dreams can conceive. In the age of 4G and 5G internet, to claim the superiority of these medieval modes of communication is like a fool’s brag.

I wouldn’t mind arguing in the favor of communication relayed through the heart and eyes. Man has spoken to deities, angels, and strangers only through heartbeat, dreams, and the mutual gaze. Moreover, most of the science is merely a product of supposition and human imagination. The brain assists at times like these as an e-library and a word processor. Some communications are silent and some are loud. Some are essential and others are meaningless. One of those necessary ones is the one that planet Earth is trying to establish with its residents, the communication of peaceful coexistence.

This is the age of infotech and communication revolutions. Scientists are planning to go to the moon to set up a 4G network in order to make contact with the robo explorers. Imagine communicating with an IA on another planet. How much access and control of the far-flung planets it will give to human beings, sitting here on the earth.

Man’s phenomenal increase in reach and capability to travel with speed and light provides him with abundant resources and choices.

The unprecedented success in communication and algorithms has given him limitless powers to explore planets and their moons.

However, we cannot forget how the explorers of the other planets treated their own. The present conditions of Earth are predictors of what can happen on other worlds. So far humans have contributed  nothing but debris to space and the other planets. We have polluted space while we will plunder the moon and Mars. We want to terraform other planets while we are rapidly burning ours.

Every now and then Earth tries to communicate with us, protesting against our treatment of her. Sometimes it shakes, other times it spills water reminding its residents to live in harmony and mutual respect.

But we overlook these attempts at communication from our home. We keep on exploiting everything we can to bend the universe to our purpose.

The ego is a veil between humans and God.

  • Rumi

The sooner humans learn to be one with the universe, the better it is for their existence. We can explore and expand to any part of the galaxy but should not intend to subjugate it. Like earth, the universe offers gifts of many sorts: lands full of minerals and horizons loaded with newer milky ways. Now it is a reality that the Southern Hemisphere of the moon holds water. Who knows what else is hidden out there. Before soaring there to transform other planets, we must stop devastating our home. This is what the Earth is trying to say if we are willing to listen. Earth feeds, protects, and provides for us like a parent. It shelters us as a home. It dispenses water to quench our thirst. So far, all voyaging across universes strongly recommends that Earth is more precious and valuable to us than anything the universe could offer. Let us cherish it more and keep it safe. We should mean what we say and we should say what we mean.

She

She

She strolls in and time stands still, the room begins to glow, air gets aromatic, sceneries on the wall come to life and my heart starts dancing . An aura of grace escorts her and charm genuflects. She unveils the creator’s mastery and unfolds chapters of enchantment. Her fingers move acoustically and her look is musical. Fairies feel shy and pixies envy her. Stars shine and flowers bud to her smile. She heats my heart and stirs my soul. How can I keep my heart and how can I maintain my vanity? She is crazily cute and superlatively attractive.

Not only is she beautiful but also tremendously intelligent, wise and witty. She speaks with flowers and her smile is fragrant. Little stars in her eyes swirl my soul and her touch soars me above the sky of sagacity.

What’s more beautiful is her attitude. She knows she is phenomenally beautiful yet chooses to remain humble. She does not take pride in her looks rather she values modesty. She is profoundly polite, exceptionally entrusting, fundamentally friendly, nicely naughty, tremendously trustworthy, honorably honest, and outstandingly out of this world. She believes in hard work and trusts in  ability. A good person and a great friend. She is a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and philanthropist.

One glance by her can vanish my sleep and one smile by her turns my world upside down. My heart pumps faster, my breath goes crazy, my throat desiccates and my lips are locked in her presence. My vocabulary dries up and my sentences mingle. I lose my senses and begin to act weird. She is mightily prepossessing and vitally irresistible. Her glamour knocks me out and her spell rocks me. She arrests my moment and diwindles my hour. I can gaze at her glaring eyes for the rest of my life. I can hear her voice from dawn to dusk. I can wait for her till the end of time. I will gamble away my life and I will trade heavens for her. Her wisdom is my fort and my heart is her home.

If you love someone, you are always joined with them–in joy, in absence, in solitude, in strife.

Rumi

She is dear and she is near. She is sweet and she shines. She sparkles my soul and twinkles in my dreams. I breathe for her and my heart beats in her respect. Her blink is my order and her node is my reward. She is my hope and she stands behind my struggles. I can wage war for her and I will win castles if she so desires. She made me what I am and she designs what I would be. I adore her. I love her.

Can’t take my eyes off you

Falling Leaf

It’s not easy to imbibe, grow, and flourish. I do all that. That’s when you grow on me and at that stage, I become a tree. You and I enjoyed the spring and summer together, we had joy, we had fun, we had seasons and the sun.  Autumn and winter are approaching. Now it’s time for you to fall, says the tree to the leaf.

I abstract chloroform for you, blistering myself in the process. I face scorching heat to provide you with shade. I help you grow seeds and fruits. I decorate your barren trunk and branches. I resist the wind, rain, storm and heat. I give sound to your silence. I cover and protect you. Well! You begin to ignore me when I need you the most. When I grow weak, lose my colors, and when my life is in danger. Yet I will fall since obeying you is my virtue but remember, I love you and I am not a quitter.

I don’t give up. I am the leaf. You will throw me on the ground and I will become the fertilizer that makes you stronger. Your branches are my playground. My home. My love. I know I am a leaf that got to grow on a plant. Doesn’t matter how bad you treat me or how many times I fall, I will keep coming back.

Never say goodbye

Jon Bon Jovi

“How can I shed you by choice? Tell me my sweetheart!” sighs the trunk. You are an eternal part of me and I am incomplete without you. Only you decorate me and add beauty to my existence. You are the source of my chloroform, I breathe through you. You are my eyes and my ears. You are my lifeline. I become mere wood when you are gone.

It’s the weather that departs us and makes me shed. I work hard to regrow you and witness your reincarnation. I will give a new birth. I preserve meristematic tissue for your new life. As soon as the weather becomes warmer, along with the availability of light, nutrients and water, I tirelessly begin to grow you back. What do you know how much I suffer without you? I go fasting, feel cold, face rains, snow and malnutrition.

Only the living can write the songs of separation. The dead cannot imagine the agony of uncoupling. Only the living one faces the anguish of separation. The trauma of detachment goes to bones. The torture of severance throws one in the desert of abandonment. I miss you. We will meet again.

I know nothing returns from the valley of death. If it does it never comes in the same shape. I would like them to enjoy the way they love each other.

I will not interfere in their argument. I don’t intend to make their life miserable, like humans did with information, knowledge and the so called enlightenment. Living unconsciously like most of the botanical and zoological life may be a blessing in itself. Our conscious life gave nothing to this earth but pollution and plundering. What did we get from knowledge is also arguable?

In Golf We Trust

The cool breeze makes the morning of an October a bit chilly yet my enthusiasm to play scratch today keeps me warm. The course is mystifying, dewdrops in the fairway are intoxicating and trees are already in a welcoming mood with open arms.

In a beautiful golf attire with an envying Taylormade M6 kit, in the presence of a credible caddie and sun ready to rise in the background, I am all set to take off from tee one.

In the crew is a very dear lifelong friend, a loving son and a great golfer, my nephew. Playing with these folks makes me so happy and grateful. This is a family flight beyond the bounds of victory and loss. It is a flight of gratitude and gratefulness. Life has given me so much more than I asked for. It’s time for me to appreciate and cherish it. One way to do that is  humbleness and thankfulness.

Holy men and saints choose the path of gratitude to their salvation and eternal destination. No one succeeds without struggle and no success survives without acknowledgement. History witnesses that one of the ways a monk reaches nirvana, a saint acquires salvation, a sufi finds eternity, and a pandit attains Brahma, is gratitude. It is a road of the honorable and respectful.

Gratitude As A Spiritual Path.

Robert Hudson

Coming back to our flight, it looks like I will not finish my round even close to scratch. Rather I was taken over by the lines of this write up. I can feel tears and sentences pouring. I am in the company of a friend whom I met the very first day I went to elementary school decades ago. My lovely son who’s diapers I had changed as a fragile infant now beats me in golf. My nephew who used to sit in my lap is now a graduate from an Australian university, runs his own business, and hits 300+ drives. I struggled in my life and it paid off. No one gets all they want but I should not be unhappy for what I didn’t get. Instead I am satisfied with my work, my gains and with my fate. I can only guess who wrote it yet I am grateful for the chapter that was written for me in the great book of destiny.

Although millions of sperms were there, I was the lucky one awarded with the wonderful present of life. Among millions gifted with life I was the one to be born with affluent parents, rich both in love and in sacrifice. From millions of opulent infants I was awarded the life I have. Millions would be born with much more than I have but given the chance I would love to repeat my life cycle again and again. I am grateful to my creator, ancestors, parents and their siblings, my siblings, spouses, children, friends, neighbours, teachers, colleagues, city, state, country, world, universe and the heavens; where I hope to end up.

If so I would be writing another note of gratitude another day, to fellow heaveners, fairies and angels.

Buddha said: “A person of integrity is grateful & thankful. This gratitude, this thankfulness, is advocated by civil people. It is entirely on the level of people of integrity.”

Neighborhood of The Milky Way

The night is dark, the moon is missing, stars rule the sky tonight, and the Milky Way glitters in full.  When I bring my eyes back to earth, another constellation sits in my neighborhood as well. As a matter of fact, I am a part of this twinkling world at the moment. This is a hilltop village of the world famous Bhurban valley at 6500 ft. above sea level, called “ Aliyot.” The spread out lights coming from houses on the surrounding hills multiply this place with the shining stars. One can easily call it the man-made Milky Way on hillsides.

Pine Court is an exclusive summer resort. This is a destination of the elite and affluent. I am nothing of the sort but through the courtesy of the chief executive of this expensive enterprise  I enjoy the perks of a five star guest gracing the presidential suite. The seat at the terrace restaurant is a chair among the stars that dominate the atmosphere from all angles. What a wonderful spot to appreciate the clear and open sky loaded with fixed luminous points. An emporium of scenes, snacks and sustenances. I disagree with the choice of restaurant furniture but who has time to care for a cane chair when there is so much to see out there.

This is a hidden jewel on the top of a magnificent mountain. The bird’s eye view of the valleys below, constant cold temperature, breeze full of daisy scent and perfume of sanobar cones, waves of tall pine trees and frequency of clouds and mist add a blend of heaven to this piece of grandeur. The architecture and interior of the chalets has a class. This unique summer abode sits on a triangle of geography. Mountains on the East represent Kashmir, hills on the west constitute Galliat and in itself it stands for Bhurban valley. Scenes change here like in a movie. Marvel of the morning here is a cradle of blessings, the warmth of noon is a statement of strength, afternoons are melodic and evenings are romantic, nights dance here to the rhythm of celestial tunes. If earth was a painting drawn by the brush of nature Aliyot was the canvas. Tranquility of this hill is paradisiacal. Peace here touches a delicate mind and the ambiance is mystically lyrical.

A brief stay at this particular facility has untapped some new faculties of my soul tonight. I tune myself to the calm and let all the anxieties exhaust and expire. Once the slate of the old thoughts is wiped clean, new ones breed in and that’s what is called a fresh start.

“Remember, the entrance door to the

 sanctuary is inside you.”

  • Rumi

In order to take a fresh start we must find a place, a person, a book or a task that would ignite our budding capacities. A seed carries cotyledons  within all it needs is germinative conditions. Yes Pine Court provides the soul with that environment.

Good luck friends! You may find the opportunity soon to rediscover yourself and take a fresh start. May these celestial and hillside Milky Ways illuminate the candle that you are carrying within you. Your soul may twinkle to spread the light of peace and tranquility.

Those who light up others burn themselves and those who burn in the fire of wisdom become the torch towers of enlightenment.

A song of Peace
